The start of a new season is a reminder to all that everyone starts with the same record. Last season's letdowns are forgotten and replaced by hopes and championship aspirations. For the three Clay-area school district, the new season is welcomed by all. Gone is Baldwinsville's crushing 35-8 playoff loss to Liverpool. Forgotten is Cicero-North Syracuse's four-game losing streak to end a season full of such promise. Over is Liverpool's devastating 41-34 overtime playoff loss to West Genesee. 2009 is full of fresh starts with players graduating and underclassmen more experienced, it's an exciting time. For these three districts, their coaches, players and fans, it couldn't be a better time...

The Girls of Summer

Sue Lindsley 07/24/09

Take me out to the ballgame. Whether it’s a game at Yankee Stadium against the Boston Red Sox or a tee ball game with your own children, there is just something about the game of baseball, and I’m including softball in this statement. When I was a youngster, Sally League (Little League for girls) was just getting organized. It was a time when most boys would still pick girls last even if they were better than some of the boys. But the times they are a changin’. Girls’ softball games can be an exciting and nail biting experience.
In Clay, the Seneca Girls’ Softball League has been around for over 30 years. This year they had 300 girls in four divisions ranging from kindergarteners to college freshman...

LYLA Urges Spring Cleaning with Launch of Lacrosse Equipment Donation Program

Editor 06/26/09

The Liverpool Youth Lacrosse Association (LYLA) is starting a used equipment donation program to help ease the financial stress many families are feeling during these tough economic times. The league is asking that anyone with used boys or girls lacrosse equipment – which many times can run approximately $200 per child when purchased new – donate it to LYLA so children interested in playing the sport can do so without a big investment.

“Children are in to so many sports these days that it is difficult for parents to make a big equipment investment up front when the child may change their mind and play another sport the next season,” said Earl Hall, president of LYLA...

Behind the Scenes at Section 3

Paul Lyboult 05/27/09

In the college sports world the acronym NCAA is famous not only for what those letters stand for, but what the association does as a whole. Understanding who helps govern high school sports can be quite bit confusing since there are so many more teams in play. Star players and standout head coaches locally are quite well known, yet the question remains, who is the “NCAA” of high school athletics in the area? The answer is Section 3, an entity which organizes and administers the athletic programs of schools in section 3 of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).
John Rathbun has been the executive director at Section 3 since July of 2008, and before that he was a part of the state’s National Chamber of Commerce for 10 years...

East West Combat Club grapples to the top

Paul Lyboult 05/05/09

Are you ready to rumble? If you’re not, there is a place you can learn. The East-West Combat Club in Liverpool promises to not only get you into better shape, but also train you like the next UFC champion. Having recently experienced what the club has to offer I can tell you that they most certainly keep their promises.

Highly touted as a black belt school East-West is led by head instructors Hermes Franca and Marc Gervais. These teachers give excellent instruction and positive reinforcement in every class, something that made me wanting to keep going back for more. Both are also veteran combat competitors and have a very deep knowledge of what they teach. Franca has been a regular in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu...

B'ville girls' lacrosse aims high in 2009

Paul Lyboult 03/30/09

One of the most anticipated events of the spring is the beginning of the Baldwinsville girls’ lacrosse season. The Bees opened the year March 27 against Saratoga Springs with hopes of continuing the success they have enjoyed in past years. The program has accumulated 260 wins along with regular top three finishes in their division since starting varsity play in 1990. Baldwinsville also won the New York State championship in 2000.

Bringing in a core group of hard working players every season has allowed the Baldwinsville girl's lacrosse team to maintain a high level of play and winning tradition. Yet there is more to the team’s achievements than some impressive statistics. Coach Doug Rowe attributes much of the team's success to support from the Baldwinsville area...

Liverpool Softball Hitting High

Paul Lyboult 03/30/09

April 14 is closing in and for members of the Liverpool softball team it can’t come soon enough. Fresh off a section final appearance for the 8th time since 1991, the Warriors look forward to opening day as they look to have another solid outing in 2009. Head coach Nick Spataro returns for his 20th year as coach and should continue to add to his impressive resume. Under Spataro the Warriors have won over 300 games and went unbeaten in 2003. He has been named coach of the year and in the past has guided his team to three league championships. Assistant head coach Korey O'Malley, who is a former Liverpool student, also leads the team and is now entering her fourth year with the team.

Not only does the team have a solid coaching staff, they also have solid players...

Liverpool Made Waves in 2009

Paul Lyboult 03/02/09

In the sports world there is nothing more important than tradition. Schools pride themselves on it and the athletes at the institutions are motivated by it. When it comes to Liverpool High School, tradition is no greater than in its swimming program. The boys’ team has a long history of dominance dating back to the late 1960's through the early 1980's; at one point they won 15 consecutive sectional titles. The 2008-2009 Warriors team looked to add to the school's historic success.

Leading the experienced Warriors is head coach Mike Ferrell, who arrived in Syracuse close to 35 years ago. Ferrell previously coached the Camillus Swim Club and the boys’ varsity swim team at Jamesville-Dewiit, among other stops, before arriving at Liverpool...

Liverpool Local Lacrosse

Melissa Renahan 01/29/09

LYLA is not just a new spelling of a child’s name; it is the Liverpool Youth Lacrosse Association and though the snow continues to fall, their season is fast approaching. In fact, by mid-March their popular lacrosse clinic for boys and girls will start up indoors and at the end of those eight weeks the players will venture outside to take the field.

Earl Hall, current president of the association and coach, is already preparing for what should be LYLA’s biggest season yet. Last year LYLA had approximately 250 kids registered to play across its boys and girls divisions, which span 2nd through 8th grades. This year, with the additional of the kindergarten through 2nd grade boys division, they are expecting an even higher number...

B'ville Wrestling is Slamming the Competition

Paul Lyboult 01/29/09

The Bees wrestling program is taking on all comers and should continue its recent run of success with another hard-hitting season this year. A remarkable turnaround considering that just three years ago the team was in peril and had just eight wins during the 2005-2006 season. Coach Ken Brown was forced to build his program from the bottom up and saw success possible within five to six years. Remarkably the program has responded quicker than anyone, Brown included, could have imagined. Case in point this season; the team has begun this year with 17 wins and just five losses, which also marks the third straight season in which the Bees have double digit win totals. Compared to just eight wins during the ’05-’06 campaign, the Bees are officially revitalized...

Baldwinsville running strong

Paul Lyboult 11/03/08

Since the beginning of the season only one thing has been on the mind of Baldwinsville’s cross country (XC) team. A championship. The Baldwinsville Runners look to run towards that goal as their season begins to come to an end. They look to build on the success they have had so far this year with future contests against CNS and Tully, and race to the finish line hoping for a title the team craves so desperately.
In the coming weeks B’ville will face several tough challenges including another matchup with CNS and Utica Proctor that could dash their title hopes. For the team to be successful look to Ethan Pacheck to help lead the way...
