Liverpool High School Executive Principal Greg Avellino recently announced that LHS senior David Carpenter has been named a finalist in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Carpenter was among the highest scoring entrants after taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and is one of approximately 15,000 students honored as a finalist.
Starting in March, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will begin notifying approximately 8,200 of those finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship award.
Approximately 1.5 million students from more than 21,000 high schools in the United States took the 2007 test.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSATs and by meeting published entry/participation requirements.
