Technology Recycler Moves to Clay

Melissa Renahan 01/29/09

Recycling is an important issue. Things like glass, cans and paper are easily disposed of in CNY, and many things can be donated to the Salvation Army or churches, but what about technology? As technological advances continually move forward, we are left with many antiquated printers, computers, phones and faxes that are no longer useful and left to clutter up desks and closets. Luckily for Clay residents and businesses, a solution just moved to town.

OC Management started off 2009 in a new space when they relocated from North Syracuse to Clay. Their business, which is slightly hard to label, involves the dismantling and recycling of obsolete and surplus information technology (IT) equipment. The industry originated because of the strict ecology regulations that most states have put in place. In NY they are C7-certified and able to handle any technology recycling.

“You can’t just throw out your laptop with the regular trash,” said general manager and Clay resident Bill Neufang. “It can do some damage and then causes worry over what type of planet our children will inherit.”

To date they have partnered with over 200 clients, from Rochester to Albany, to remove their excess or outdated IT related equipment. Most of the time they work with schools, hospitals, and businesses; but that is not to say they do not serve the average citizen. In the past they have held community-wide events where any resident of the town can come and drop off their computers, etc. at no cost. They are hoping to organize such an event this spring or summer in Clay.

“The first step,” Neufang assures, “is always to wipe all data off the machines, from hard drives to external labels.”

Next they evaluate if the item can be refurbished or if any component can be salvaged. After their technician completes the necessary work, those items are then sold to third world countries, primarily in South America or the Middle East. Equipment determined to be unusable is dismantled and then separated so that it may be sold to larger, in-country recycling firms. Nothing is sent to China to be recycled.

This June, OC Management will mark its fourth year in business since CEO Tom Hannon of Baldwinsville recognized the need for this service. They are currently accepting new business and encourage companies and organizations to consider using their unique services.

“We can typically do the removal at a very low cost – sometimes even for no cost. It depends on the volume of equipment and the labor required. If it is packed and all we need to do is pick it up, it can be done for free,” explains Neufang.

OC Management is located at 4683 Burr Drive, in suites 2 and 3. They are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and encourage citizens to come by and drop off their items during business hours. However, in order to ensure that they are not dealing with larger deliveries, please call 458-3242 or email ocrecycle1@verizon.net ahead of time.
